A New Complexion for a New Year

By Jasmine Holzenthal

Lets start the year off right by eating for healthy skin. Eating right is just as important for your complexion as what you put onto your skin. Winter is in full swing and for most that means dry skin is too. To keep skin looking healthy and fresh during the time when we need it the most you first need to know what to put into your body.

Incorporate foods or supplements into your diet that contain omega-3 or omega-6 fatty acids, such as fish oil and flaxseed oil. some key foods containing these essential fatty acids for healthy skin are salmon, walnuts, canola oil, and flaxseed.

Vitamin A is very important to skin health. One of the best ways to get vitamin A is from low fat dairy products. Foods high in antioxidants such as blueberries, blackberries, strawberries and plums are also very beneficial to your skin and keep it healthy. For breakfast or a midday snack, try nonfat greek yogurt mixed with fresh berries and walnuts (greek yogurt contains more protein than regular which will keep you full longer).

Green tea has anti inflammatory properties that are beneficial to overall skin health. Drinking enough water (about 8 glasses a day) ensures that our skin cells are being properly hydrated which keeps skin looking healthy and young. Water also helps move nutrients in and flush toxins out.

The healthier the foods are that you eat, the better your skin will look.
