A Piece of Ryan P

Ryan Pavlovich is a lifestyle and music photographer. I had the pleasure of working with him on a shoot during the Hurrican Gustav Evacuation. I packed up my inventory in the studio and made my way up north, stopping in Grand Rapids to both visit family and collaborate with another dedicated artist. I found Ryan’s portfolio on the web and knew that I wanted to create some amazing images with him. Now on our third shoot together, I told him about the magazine and how I thought it would be perfect to feature him and his work.
Here is the Q & A session we had together:
-When did you become interested in photography?

I fell in love with photography in college, when I developed my first black and white print “pretty sure that photo was total crap though”.

-How did you start? How long have you been a photographer?

I started in college, I took a class for the heck of it and fell in love instantly. I loved the magic of watching a fraction of a moment that I captured come to life on paper. I guess I have actually called myself a photographer for about five years now, but it’s a really strange thing to say “yeah I’m a photographer.” I think it’s because just about anyone can call themselves that now.

-What inspires your work?

My work is inspired by a lot of things, but I’d say that capturing people in as real of a way as I can is what I really love. I’ve pulled ideas for shoots from paintings, other photographers, graphic design, day dreams… just about anything really; when it comes down to it it’s all about the moment that is in front of me thats all I care about.

-Was there any job or subject in particular that refined your aesthetic in photography?

I can’t say that there’s been any specific job or subject in particular that refined my photography I guess. I like that I’m still learning and refining my images every time I pick up a camera and shoot. It’s strange when I hear that people talk about my “style of photography” or the look that my work has, because to me it’s still growing and developing so I only see where I would like it to go.

-What do you hope to achieve through your art? What should the viewer take or see, from looking at your work?

This is a great question. I went through art school trying to convince professors and fellow students of what they should see in my work and what I was going for, and now I just realize that most of what I said that whole time was a load of crap. To be honest I want people to look at my work and get inspired. I think the greatest compliment I get is from those people who go out and shoot something or create something and later let me know that I was a part of them doing that somehow. To me my images are my way of seeing the world, the people I meet, and the crazy things we come up with sometimes. There’s really not a big secret to it, or a deep thoughtful meaning. I just want to create cause its what I love doing and I hope the people that look at my work enjoying looking at the things I create.
